Hello, I am Guylaine Chevanel, I have been teaching English for 35 years and I am now an ESL instructor in a primary school in Quebec.

I am an English Speaking Partner

The Web Pals

WHAT IS THE Web Pals?

  • The Web Pals is an educational service that sets up language exchanges between French and English-speaking schools/kids. Using online videoconferencing apps or messages, the service pairs up francophone ESL students from Quebec with FSL anglophone students. Communications are supervised and corrected by ESL and FSL teachers and tutors.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • In class or at home, students work through a series of lesson units. Using emails and CCing the teacher or tutor, ESL students will then write in English, and the FSL students in French. Sometimes, learners will be required to write in their mother tongue to allow for practice in written comprehension.

  • Upon completion of a few lesson units, videoconferences are organized in class or classZoom sessions. During these sessions, learning buddies have the opportunity to get to know one another by using fun student-led activities like quizzes and presentations. Videoconference activities are conducted at the discretion of teachers and tutors.

  • At the next stage, matched pairs conduct live language exchanges by online videoconferencing apps or by telephone. ESL students are required to speak in English 75% of the time along with some French such as to enable FSL learners to develop their oral comprehension; the inverse of this learning scheme is applied to FSL students.

WHY USE THE WEB PALS?

  • To forge friendships among Web Pals such as to develop enduring relationships between ESL and FSL students.

  • To share language and culture in a very authentic and natural way.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

  • The Web Pals program comes with the FromMeÀToi platform.
